From Nelson one would travel north on hwy 31 along the scenic shores of Kootenay Lake and there situated between the Selkirk and Purcell Mountains is the Village of Kaslo a former sawmill town now revered for its spectacular views of the surrounding alpine peaks and picturesque lake.

Curling – The Kaslo Curling Club always welcomes new members they have schedules for seniors, ladies, men and mixed.

  • Kaslo Skatepark
  • Heritage Home Walking Tour – Drop in to the local information centre and pick up a walking tour guide book, you can easily walk this historic and informative tour within an hour or two.
  • Kaslo Public Golf Course – Golf lovers put Kaslo on the list of must play courses. Stop by and enjoy a leisurely 9 holes you will be glad you did!
  • The Kaslo River Trail – Pioneered by the Kaslo Trailblazers a community and visitor supported group of dedicated individuals. The trail is a network of maintained hiking and wheelchair friendly trails including a large covered pedestrian bridge featuring magnificent river views. Maps, signs and benches dot the trail providing walkers with direction, history and a great place to take in the scenery.
  • Mt. Buchanan Lookout – Fabulous views of Kaslo and Kootenay Lake are the reward at the end this trail route. Hang Glider enthusiasts can contact the Kaslo Hang Gliding Club who manages two launching ramps at this site.
  • Kaslo Kayaking – Rent a Kayak and discover the glories of Kootenay Lake . Inexpensive expert instruction is available and worthwhile especially if you are not familiar with this late.

Local Entertainment
  • The Langham Theater – Is a cultural experience of art, live theatre and musical performances. This intimate space can seat up to 80 people. The Langham is also home to two galleries the main gallery featuring art from outside the area and a community gallery of local art as well a variety of community workshops and classes are often scheduled here. Guests are always welcome at the Langham.
  • The Japanese Canadian Museum – Is a permanent exhibit located at the Langham

  • The Trailblazers Pedestrian Bridge – Is a huge covered pedestrian bridge joining the North and South Kaslo river trails
Main Community Event

Jazz Festival – Held every August long weekend the Kaslo Jazz Etc Summer Music Festival continues to host world-class acts of musical talents to please all musical tastes. Musicians take the stage on a unique floating stage resting just offshore a little sandy beach on Kootenay Lake .

May Day Celebration – This proud community has been celebrating May Day uninterrupted for over the past century. Local school children weave the May Pole with colored ribbons in the traditional May Pole dance. You won't want to miss other events of the day including an antique car show, log sport events, and beer gardens.

Shopping

Downtown Kaslo is mesmerizing with its tree-lined streets and stately Victorian buildings it has an easily walkable shopping district of small stores and shops. Essentials are covered with a grocery store, organic food store, bakery, liquor store, post office, gas stations and a selection of shops selling flowers, clothes and souvenirs, this village has it all.

The Kaslo Saturday Market is held each Saturday from June to September on Front Street . Products include a wide selection of locally-grown produce, home-made jewelry, pottery and crafts.

Senior Services

The Kaslo Seniors' Association (KSCA) supports numerous programs geared to local seniors encouraging opportunities to meet, socialize, and stay informed about issues of particular interest to seniors. Some planned activities throughout the year include bridge groups, singing, cooking, carpet bowling, bingo, and curling. Support activities include meals on wheels, supportive housing options and s eniors helping seniors. Low cost housing for seniors is also available in Kaslo.

The Victorian Community Health Centre of Kaslo includes residential care, adult day programs, 24/7 emergency services, some diagnostic services such as x-ray and laboratory services, and primary health services on the lower floor. Residential care (Long Term Care) has 18 permanent beds plus a respite/palliative bed. The facility also has a palliative suite made possible from donations by Kaslo and North Kootenay Lake residents.

The Kaslo air-strip was developed primarily for light single and twin engine planes. The strip is used mainly by pleasure aircraft but is also used for emergency medical evacuation and forestry. The strip is open for seasonal landings from late spring to late fall.

Float planes can land on Kootenay Lake . Kaslo Bay has a sheltered lagoon for harbouring pontoon equipped planes.
